2. Descripción de la asignatura.
The subject focuses on processes and tools to solve optimization problems in communication network design. Among the considered factors are: capacity dimensioning, routing, link resource allocation (data rate, channels, etc) and resource planning. The course starts showing the relevance of optimization in communication networks and introduces the basic concepts. Then Linear and Integer Programing are presented, together with modeling techniques and software tools. Then the course concentrates on network design based on optimization with network flow models. In the last part, some efficient algorithms to optimally compute network routes are explained. Real communication protocols applying those algorithms are presented. Additionally, students develop assignments that involve handling software tools to solve optimization problems.
Solutions in engineering are often constrained by factors such as available resources, allotted time and human capabilities, all involved in the given tasks. Optimization theory, together with its application in communication networks, allow engineers to optimally use those resources according to some given criteria. The steady progress of communication technologies, services and the growth Internet traffic, requires rigorous network planning, if we are to achieve the desired interconnectivity. This lecture contributes to the development of design abilities by optimally allocating resources in communication networks.
