RATIONALE Universidad del Norte has developed a program of study of English that will help students in their future professional life to become leaders in their area of expertise, as well as future candidates to postgraduate and specialized courses including Phd's in foreign universities. This is the reason why our students continue developing their communicative skills in a foreign language. 4. COURSE GOAL To understand the main point of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. To deal with most situations likely to arise while in an area where the language is spoken. To produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. To describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. 5. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES At the end of the course, students will be able to: Reading: Comprehend main ideas and details. Understand and interpret tables, graphs, and charts. Differentiate between opinion and fact. Make Inferences to understand ideas not stated directly. Writing: Write paragraphs with sentence variety (simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences). Use parallel structure. Develop cohesion with transition words and related word forms. Listening: Identify main ideas and specific details. Make inferences to understand ideas not stated directly. Arrange events in chronological order. Interpret statistics and descriptions of tables, graphs, and charts. Speaking: Interrupt politely and deal with interruptions. Justify points of view when challenged. Sequence events in a personal narrative. In addition, the following grammatical structures will be covered in the course: Because- Even though, Modals of future possibility, Comparatives and equatives, First conditional, comparatives and equatives. Selected grammar: Simple Passive form. 6.
