This is the fifth course of the IRE program, the third of the professional cycle. It is aimed at students that have a B1.3 CEFR (Common European Framework) level. These students have a high-intermediate English level, but need to continue developing and expanding their knowledge to succeed in the field of International Relations.

This level continues strengthening the four language skills, grammar, and vocabulary, focusing on the topics related to cultures of the regions of the world and their societies. The objective of this level is to create an awareness of cultural similarities and differences around the world. Upon finishing this level, students should reach B1 level of CEFR.


3. RATIONALE

Proper management of an international language such as English is necessary so that a professional can function in an increasingly globalized and multicultural society. The internationalization of the relations between the global communities has brought about challenges that every professional needs to face in order to be more competitive. Among those challenges is adopting a language that facilitates communication - both personally and professionally with other cultures. The Instituto de Idiomas has designed this program for International Relations English to contribute to the intellectual, cultural, and professional development of our students.


4. OBJECTIVES

4.1. GENERAL OBJECTIVES
Understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered; communicate spontaneously in most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken; produce connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest; and describe various aspects and impressions giving detailed reasons and explanations.

4.2. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
-Analyze several readings on a certain topic to choose relevant information.
-Compare and contrast information from several readings.
-Make inferences and draw conclusions about information that is not clearly stated in the text.
-Analyze maps and tables to extract information.
-Answer questions about class material.
-Present comparing and contrasting information on cultural topics [women, corruption, etc.] using a slideshow.
-Produce paragraphs with simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences.
-Write an essay comparing and contrasting two or more cultures using an outline
-Analyze, question, and evaluate (make inferences, draw conclusions, and form opinions) from audiovisual materials.
-Compare cultures in terms of gender, power, and economy.

Topic 1: What culture is: definition and its components
Topic 2: Power: Anglo-American, Latinamerican, Slavic anc Oceanic cultures
Topic 3: The economy: European, Sino-Japanese, Austlral-European cultures
Topic 4: Women: Islamic, African, Indian and South East Asian cultures.
