This course is the fourth of the program and is offered to students who have been placed at level B1.2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework). These students have an intermediate knowledge of English, but need to continue developing and expanding this knowledge in order to successfully work in the International Relations field.

This level starts with the B1 development. It will focus on strengthening the four basic skills of language along with grammar and vocabulary. Likewise, this level begins the preparation for content-based English courses and promotes the development of critical thinking skills in International Relations, focusing on authentic persuasive texts and situations.


3. RATIONALE

Proper management of an international language such as English is necessary so that a student can function in an increasingly globalized and multicultural society. The internationalization of the relations between the global communities has brought about challenges that every professional needs to face in order to be more competitive. Among those challenges is adopting a language that facilitates communication - both personally and professionally - with other cultures.


4. OBJECTIVES

4.1. GENERAL OBJECTIVES
Understand the main and ideas and details of standard written and oral texts dealing with information common to the work place, studies, and hobbies. Communicate spontaneously in some situations when the language is used. Describe experiences and events, dreams and ambitions, briefly giving opinions and describing plans in oral and written form. Persuade an audience by supporting opinions with reasons and detailed explanations in oral or written form. Identify, evaluate and discuss methods of persuasion and debate.

4.2. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
-Identify main ideas and specific details, make inferences, and draw conclusions from various types of readings, including editorials and articles.
-Synthesize information from multiple texts.
-Identify main ideas and specific details, make inferences, and draw conclusions from listenings.
-Write coherent argumentative essays.
-Produce correct simple, compound, and complex sentences using concessions (in spite of, despite, even though, although).
-Engage in a moderated point-counterpoint group discussion in order to provide and respond to different opinions.
-Identify and use persuasive communication.
