This course is the second of the program and is offered to students who have an a2.3 cefr (common european framework) level. These students have a basic knowledge of english and need to develop and expand that knowledge of the language.

This level continues with the development of the four language skills to lead students to complete the a2 level. It also promotes the development of skills in critical thinking and intercultural issues using aspects from field of international relations, specifically in how historical events affect current policy.


3. RATIONALE

Proper management of an international language such as English is necessary so that a professional can function in an increasingly globalized and multicultural society. The internationalization of the relations between the global communities has brought about challenges that every professional needs to face in order to be more competitive. Among those challenges is adopting a language that facilitates communication - both personally and professionally - with other cultures.


4. OBJECTIVES

4.1. GENERAL OBJECTIVES
Understand the main points of clear spoken and written language about matters regularly encountered in work, school, and leisure. Communicate spontaneously in basic situations wherever the language is spoken. Discuss topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life. Produce coherent texts to prompts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest and narrative paragraphs. Briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans in written and oral form. Explain broad historical patterns relevant to international relations.

4.2. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
Identify main ideas and specific details from readings and historical narratives.
Identify main ideas and specific details from conversations and short talks.
Recognize run-ons and produce simple, compound, and complex sentences.
Write coherent narrative paragraphs.
Participate in a point-counterpoint group interview related to current topics in IR.
Give a 3-5 minute informative presentation about a historical figure.
Explain how historical events have led to current political realities.
